This version sounds a lot less empty, cold, and mechanical in comparison to the studio version. This live version represents Kanye smoothing out those rough edges and elevating his work to new heights. It was a little rough around the edges, yeah, but it shaped a lot of the music that came in the next 10+ years. This guy went from rapping to straight up pop music and it actually worked out. The original studio version of 808s & Heartbreak is a fantastic, classic album and showed off Ye's genius versatility. I've only listened to the audio, so I haven't been influenced by the theatrics (which I've heard are pretty good). Note that I haven't actually watched the show in question. and this is a damned bootleg live album! How the hell does that even happen? In fact, this is the third perfect score I've given to Kanye. He is the ONLY artist I've given more than one 10/10.

FIND A GOOD DOWNLOAD OR ELSE WE'RE NOT LISTENING TO THE SAME THING.Īt this point I'm convinced this guy is some sort of magical being from another dimension. But a handful of mumbling isn't enough to stop me from proclaiming Live At The Hollywood Bowl as a triumph.Īnother Kanye West Masterpiece WARNING TO LISTENERS: THE VERSION ON YOUTUBE IS VERY LOW QUALITY. The only reason I don't give it a perfect score is because Kanye mumbles several lyrics throughout the performance. For example, his masterful renditions of the final verses of "Amazing" and "Street Lights" far surpass the relatively monotone studio performances. But here, on Live At The Hollywood Bowl, I find Kanye to be at his most energetic and most passionate. His voice is more cold and robotic on the studio album, which fits the minimalist atmosphere.

Kanye himself is more vibrant in this live performance as well.

The result is a more vibrant rendition of the songs, which are considerably more minimalist on the studio album. Live At The Hollywood Bowl makes use of a live orchestra, complete with violins, strings, and background singers. One factor that elevates this live performance over the studio album is the changes in instrumentation. And that's saying something, considering how spectacular the studio version is. Rarely do I prefer live performances over studio albums, but this 2015 performance of the Chicago rapper's fourth studio album blows the 2008 release out of the water.
